Small towns take obscurity in stride

There are only two major roads in and out of Island Heights, with a couple of nondescript signs along Route 37 pointing out the way.

"We're rather hidden," concedes Island Heights resident Gale Wayman, who, like just about everybody in town, wouldn't want it any other way.

Fourteen years ago, when she was looking for a new home, Wayman was thrilled to discover such scenic seclusion still existed at the Jersey Shore so thrilled, in fact, that after she had bought a place in town and got settled, some of her new neighbors quietly suggested she dial down her exuberance.

"People said, "Don't be so excited about the town, because other people will come here,' " Wayman recalls.

A similar ethic of low-key contentment pervades the other four boroughs along the Toms River South Toms River, Beachwood, Pine Beach and Ocean Gate.
